Visit Saint-Valery-sur-Somme in 1 day

All year round, strollers flock to the port of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, which borders the Somme opposite Le Crotoy. There are 250 boats moored on pontoons in the heart of the town, close to shops and restaurants. It was from here that William the Conqueror set off to conquer England with a fleet of nearly a thousand ships.

Among the historic districts to visit, also discover the Courtgain, the sailors' quarter, one of the most touristic and colourful places in Saint-Valery. You'll fall under the spell of the flower-filled lanes lined with fishermen's houses. Another place to visit: the Tours Guillaume, also known as the Porte Jeanne d'Arc, is one of the oldest remains of the medieval town (11th century). Joan of Arc was imprisoned here in December 1430.

Then head towards the Abbey district to discover the Herbarium, nestling in the ramparts. This pretty floral and botanical garden from the Middle Ages is home to more than 1,000 plants. Moving away from the town centre, the curious can climb up to the Chapelle des Marins where the monk Gualaric, the town's founding saint, was buried. Erected near the cliffs, the chapel offers a breathtaking view of the Baie de Somme.
