Unique experiences in the heart of an exceptional bay
Things to do by the sea Baie de Somme
The Baie de Somme coastline can be explored through a wide range of activities, including seal-watching, beachcombing, sand yachting and exploring seaside resorts such as Cayeux-sur-Mer, Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, renowned for their landscapes and walks along the bay.
The seaside resorts of the Baie de Somme
From Cayeux-sur-Mer to Fort-Mahon-Plage, the Baie de Somme boasts seaside resorts with very distinct characters: sandy and pebble beaches, retro cabins, historic fishing ports, long stretches dedicated to water sports. From your seaside campsite in the Somme, each of these destinations can be reached in just a few kilometers, by bike or by car along the coastline.
Cayeux-sur-Mer
Situated on the English Channel, at the entrance to the Baie de Somme, Cayeux-sur-Mer is an ideal destination for seaside vacations. The coastline stretches 14 km to the Pointe du Hourdel, where the seals of the Baie de Somme can be observed.
The Cayolese resort is famous for its pebble beach, its plank path (the longest in Europe) and its 500 multicolored bathing cabins. A genuine retro seaside postcard.
Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy
Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is known for its medieval ramparts and timeless marina. Its flower-filled quays, art galleries and seafood restaurants make it an unmissable stopover.
Across the bay, Le Crotoy clings to the north shore with the charm of an old fishing port. Its seaside villas, narrow streets leading down to the beach and lively market make it one of Picardie Maritime’s most attractive resorts.
Quend-Plage and Fort-Mahon-Plage
Head up the coast to discover the long beaches of Marquenterre, ideal for seaside activities. Quend-Plage unfurls its miles of fine sand between white dunes, blue skies and iodized sea spray.
Fort-Mahon-Plage extends this horizon of sand and sea spray. With its sand yachts, kitesurfing and surf school, the resort is the hub of beach sports on the Picardy coast.

The best sandy beaches in the Baie de Somme for swimming and lounging
The largest sandy beaches in the Baie de Somme are at Fort-Mahon-Plage and Quend-Plage. Their vast expanses of fine sand are ideal for swimming, beach games and long strolls with your feet in the water. At Cayeux, bathing is most enjoyable at rising tide, when the water covers the sandy strip and softens the access to the sea.
Cycling itinerary on the Vélomaritime in the Baie de Somme
Follow the Vélomaritime between Cayeux-sur-Mer, Saint-Valery-sur-Somme and Le Crotoy, skirting mollières, salt meadows and estuaries. Recommended stops: Pointe du Hourdel, Parc du Marquenterre and views over the bay at sunset.
Seal watching in Baie de Somme: best places and tips
The Pointe du Hourdel is the n°1 spot for observing calf and grey seals at low tide (1h30 before and coefficient >90). Keep a distance of 300 m, binoculars mandatory, guided tours from Le Crotoy or Saint-Valery (€20-25).
Crossing the Baie de Somme on foot with a naturalist guide
At low tide, set off on a guided crossing of the Baie de Somme from Le Crotoy or Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. Approx. 3 hrs to discover mollières, salt meadows and birds. Waterproof footwear recommended and strict adherence to SHOM schedules (ideal coefficient > 90). An unforgettable nature experience from April to October.
