Strolling along the quays of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme harbor, on the banks of the Somme opposite Le Crotoy, is a popular pastime all year round. It was from here that William the Conqueror set out to conquer England with a fleet of nearly a thousand ships.

Among the historic sites to visit, discover the Courtgain, the sailors’ quarter, one of Saint-Valery’s most colorful tourist spots. Another place to visit: the Tours Guillaume, also known as the Porte Jeanne d’Arc, is one of the oldest remains of the medieval town (11th century). Joan of Arc was imprisoned here in December 1430.

Then head for the Abbey district to discover theHerbarium, nestled in the ramparts. This pretty medieval botanical garden is home to over 1,000 plants. Away from the town center, the curious can climb up to the Chapelle des Marins, where the monk Gualaric, the town’s founding saint, was buried.
